Word for Word’s Sake

Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read it in the hearing of the people. And they said, “All that the LORD has spoken we will do, and we will be obedient.” Exodus 24:7

On Good Friday, Restoration is hosting the first of what I hope will develop into something we do more regularly. We’ll be having a “round table reading” of the crucifixion narrative from Mark 14-15.

The idea for having a round table reading came our of our Know The Story groups. We’d go around the table and each read a paragraph of a longer story.

Some of those who come to our Know The Story group as still working out their understanding and acceptance of the Christian Story, and others could be considered shyish. I’d never forced anyone to read, but we’d just go around and each take a piece—sometimes stumbling over the words—

And I found it was really powerful.

It reminds me that the origins of scripture for many years were passed on through public readings. And long before we had mass printing and e-books, a Bible was hard to find. To gather as a community around the Word, brings us back into the place where the Word is the bond that holds us together.

It’s also about letting the story breath. Obviously, I can’t teach through the entire story of the suffering and crucifixion in one message, so this is a chance for us to soak it in. Unfiltered. Not a dramatized movie.

The Word for the Word’s sake.
