“…the greatest of all time…”
“The most decorated _______ EVER….”
“We’re seeing history in the making…”
“…has just written their place in the history books…”
“No one has ever…”
“We may never see anything like this again…”
These are phrases that are kicked around a lot by commentators—not just in the summer games—but in many sports and even cultural contexts. We’re obsessed right now with setting records and showing that the age we’re living in is the best.
Sometimes I imagine that if in our collective consciousness, we’re aware that the time of Christ’s return is imminent. That we may well be witnessing the greatest achievements of the human capacity… because soon it will all be rolled away.
Now, I am not a doomdayist! I have 5 kids who are still very young and a lot things that I hope to see and achieve myself in this life. But as people of God’s Story, we’re reminded throughout the scriptures not to be so enamored with ourselves and our world.
With such a hope, we live fully here and now but with at least one eye on the sky searching for the Kingdom come.
