He said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life.” Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live [John 11v25]
I experienced the honor and the pain of performing my brother’s funeral a few years ago. It was intense to be there, experiencing my own grief while leading others to a place of understanding and hope. Kneeling next to his coffin at the graveside, I suddenly found myself overwhelmed and without words. Everything I had learned in seminary and in my life with Christ was in overload. I really didn’t know how to respond. Then, these words were given to me:
This story isn’t over.
We look with great irony at those moments when death is right in front of us and brings us face-to-face with the promises of scripture for new and eternal life. But the real Story of Jesus; the promises of scripture aren’t just about a lovely spiritual afterlife. They’re about resurrection.
Full life again from that which is dead. This is the Story of Jesus. He was killed. And he died and was buried. His death was attested to by the sword in his side. But he didn’t remain dead. And neither did he rise in spirit form. Shockingly, Jesus came back to life!
And in Christ, this becomes our story as well. At death, our story isn’t over. One day, when Christ returns, that grave will open up and I will see my brother again!
Praise God for the gift of resurrection and new LIFE out from the dead.
